During your consultation, make sure to let your doctor know in case you have or have had severe liver disease, low bone mineral density, osteoporosis or low levels of magnesium in your blood.

Do keep in mind the fact that by taking a proton pump inhibitor, your risk of bone fracture in areas such as the spine, hip or wrist increases. However, this is most likely to happen to people who have taken the medicine for way too long, and who are 50 or older.

The medicine should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed by your doctor. Usually, Nexium is given for 4 to 8 weeks in order to avoid any unpleasant secondary effects. Additional treatment courses may be recommended, but this depends on how well you are healing. The drug is usually taken with a gull glass of water, at least one hour before having a meal.

In case you miss a dose, simple take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. In the unfortunate case of an overdose, it is important to seek emergency medical attention, in order to avoid any issues later down the line.

What are the side effects associated with the medicine?

Just like many other drugs, Nexium also has a couple of side effects. The common once includes headache, drowsiness, mild diarrhoea, cotton mouth, nausea, gas and constipation. In case you experience worse side effects, simply call your doctor, or seek medical attention as soon as possible.
